Dear Five in the Morning: okay, this can only get easier with time. I’m going to be stuck spending time with you for the next month, let’s be cordial. Dear Troy: I say this all the time, but I love your local businesses, local food, local bars, and local people. Dear Bruise on my Right Arm: ugh. That’s the noise I make each time I glance down at you. You are not the perfect accessory to any outfit, no matter what color you are. Please just heal.
Per all of your requests, I’m going to start adding in more of my daily food habits and workout routines (now that I’m back in my groove). I’m a firm believer that one should eat clean and stay active all year round, but who’s perfect? Not this girl. And she’s going to be in a bikini in fourteen days…. so it’s crunch time!
And what may you ask am I consuming to slim down? Let me break it down for you:
Breakfast: My favorite, baked grapefruit. You’ve seen it before and you’ll see it again in the future.
Oh! And don’t forget to steep a pot of green tea. And drink it all! I’ll have a special post coming soon about a shop locally that I got some yummy tea samples from– but I have one more recipe to try first before sharing.
Lunch: The other half of the morning’s grapefruit and eggs. I try to mix it up between having one whole egg over-medium or an all egg white omelet. Today felt like an omelet kind of day paired with my favorite veggie and a fresh spicy salsa I made the night before.
Dinner: Salad with protein! My favorite salad (and you’ll notice it’s very similar to my favorite pasta dish): Lemon Feta Deliciousness!
Mix the shrimp (or chicken) with fresh garlic, lemon juice, little EVOO and crushed red pepper. Bake until cooked through. While protein is baking, wash your greens, add some feta, scallions (I like a lot!) and prep the dressing. The dressing? Super easy! Fresh lemon juice, EVOO, crushed red pepper and a tiny tad bit of honey. Mix all ingredients and gobble it up!
Don’t forget your half a grapefruit and veggies. My staple freshly steamed veggies: broccoli, spinach or green beans. Baked fresh veggies: eggplant, KALE!, beets or brussels sprouts. Use what’s in season, homies.
Snacks: raw grapefruit or an apple. However many I want, whenever I feel hungry.
Hydration: is super important. I drink 2-3 mugs of tea at my desk in the morning and at least sixty-six ounces of water while at work (that’s two big SIGG bottles). I always remember the water tip my favorite trainer taught me: at rest you should drink half of your body weight in water (in ounces of course). So at 140 pounds, I should be drinking at least seventy ounces a day. But I’ve been working out and drinking more! I take a ton of bathroom breaks but hey, climbing those stairs each time helps me tone.
My workouts for the next two weeks: will consist of boxing and running. Yesterday morning I did a half hour of mitt work followed by a ton of squats, lunges and ab work. And the previous evening I ran about two miles downtown. I can already feel myself becoming sore after taking time off to indulge. Today I was back up super early and put in another half hour of mitt work and focused on abs for another morning because I know I won’t be able to hit the gym tomorrow. Ouch. Even breathing has me hunched over while I sit in class.
A friend asked me why I was worried about toning up for Aruba if it’s just going to be lost sitting by the pool. My response: but it won’t! When I go to Aruba, I go to earn a big fat paycheck, not waist. I’m never sitting still: whether I’m swimming in the pool with the kiddos, horseback riding, snorkeling or building a castle on the beach, I’m never still watching the sunset. I’ve never even had a sip of alcohol in that country, and I’ve been going for eight years now. Because the children wake up around five and I can’t handle their rowdiness first thing, I always bounce and hit the gym or beach for a run to wake up on my own. I cook at least one of their meals a day and shop at the local market to have healthy snacks available. Vacation can be clean too!
So I’ll be throwing in deets about my workouts and recipes as I work my way towards that beach bod once again. The true test will be how much alchohol I don’t consume between now and then. Haters start hating… now.
