Now that I’m back into a workout routine, I find myself using more and more of my everyday essential oils. Here’s a look into my oily routine before and after each workout:
Before my workout Each morning I drink a big glass of fresh water to wash down my daily vitamins, but also fill up a mug of hot water with a single drop of Peppermint oil. I make sure not to skip this step before a workout because peppermint oil leaves me with ease indigestion-wise. Story time: Saturday I woke up at 5AM to run with a not-so-settled stomach after eating poorly and enjoying a few beers the night before. I knew I shouldn’t have done what I did after a week of eating healthy and knew that I couldn’t bail on my running friend. I sipped on my peppermint water, rubbed some topically across my abdomen and sprinted out the door. Twelve miles and zero bathroom breaks later, I was ready for the rest of my day! I also took this oil with me to China to drink in my bottled water to help prevent any indigestion. Think peppermint tea but a stronger dosage.
Before/during my workout The Valor essential oil blend is the number one oil that I have been using consistently over the past ten years. A friend of mine introduced me to it while training for her first marathon and I haven’t put it down since. I feel a sense of strength each time that I wear this oil. When applied, I know I’m about to work out my hardest and give it my all. Little fact about me: I’m a sweater. And when I’m half-way through my run and can smell this oil, I remind myself not to throw in the towel. I wear this oil almost daily on my wrists as a perfume.
After my workout When my legs/muscles are sore, I make sure to do three things: rehydrate, foam roll and apply PanAway essential oil blend. I think of this blend as nature’s Bengay. I either apply it directly to the sore area (using a carrier oil) or add it to my epson salt bath. Those epson salt baths are something else, let me tell you! I just recently jumped on that train over the last couple of months and have felt far less exhausted after a strenuous workout than I had previously. After Saturday’s 12 mile run- my furthest distance in over a year- I rehydrated, fueled, soaked and spent the rest of my day with my mom. In previous situations, I would have been passed out on the couch for hours. I’d like to think it’s a combination of my hard work and smart recovery routines.
After my workout If you know me on a personal level you know that I hate to wear socks. Up until only a few months ago, I even ran sock-less for every single run. Yes, every single run. And while I magically didn’t get any sort of toe fungus, my sneakers on the other hand didn’t smell too pretty. Tea Tree (melaleuca alternifolia) to the rescue! I apply this oil to the bottom of my feet after a workout when a shower isn’t in the near future (i.e. a lunchtime run). I also apply 1-2 drops onto a cotton ball and stuff that into my sneaker to keep things smelling fresh. Wa-la! No worries for me!
The peppermint, PanAway and tea tree oils all come in the Young Living premium starter kit and are all essentials in my book. If I show up to a workout and smell all sorts of delicious, now you know why!
